چکیده

We compared 2 sampling strategies designed to estimate abundance of double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus, hereafter cormorants) on aquaculture ponds in western Mississippi. Cormorants are a major predator of cultured channel catfi sh (Ictalurus punctatus) in this region; thus, estimating cormorant abundance is needed to better determine their economic impact. We independently designed a species-specifi c survey (i.e., cluster sampling) and a general survey (i.e., transect sampling) based on robust probability sampling theory to estimate abundance of this target population. During winters 2002–2003 and 2003–2004, we conducted 8 pairs of surveys and compared estimates of cormorant abundance and associated precision using conventional paired t-tests and complimentary equivalency tests. Abundance estimates from sampling methods did not differ given a minimum important effect size of 1,420 individuals. Precision of estimates for both survey protocols was poor (the coeffi cient of variation [CV] was 39.5% for cluster samples and 45% for transect samples), and we were unable to defi nitively conclude if precision was similar between sampling methods (due to low sample size and high variability). We found sample sizes must increase 222% for cluster sampling and 538% for transect sampling to detect a 15% change in abundance on average. Thus, neither method met our goals of detecting a given effect size at a desired level of precision. We recommend investigating additional sampling designs that may provide precise estimates of abundance more effi ciently than the methods compared in this study.

Morphologic and molecular identifications of digenetic trematodes in double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) from the Mississippi Delta, USA.

Increasing numbers of Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) in the Mississippi River Delta, USA, have been observed over the past few decades. This piscivorous bird is a definitive host for numerous digenetic trematodes, some of which may cause pathology in a fish host. We conducted a 2-yr survey of intestinal trematodes in 35 Double-crested Cormorants collected in the Mississippi D...

Double-crested Cormorant Movements in Relation to Aquaculture in Eastern Mississippi and Western Alabama

—Concomitant with increasing numbers of the Double-crested Cormorant ( Phalacrocorax auritus ), catfish producers in eastern Mississippi and western Alabama have reported damage caused by cormorant predation. VHF telemetry was used to document movements of 25 cormorants from all known night roosts in the aquaculture producing areas of eastern Mississippi and western Alabama, January-April 1998....

Prevalence of avian paramyxovirus 1 and avian influenza virus in double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) in eastern North America.

Although it is well established that wild birds, such as cormorants, carry virulent avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 (APMV-1; causative agent of Newcastle disease) and avian influenza virus (AIV), the prevalence of these viruses among Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) in the Great Lakes region of North America has not been rigorously studied. We determined the prevalences of APMV-...

Microsatellite Variation of Double-Crested Cormorant Populations in Eastern North America

Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) exhibit highly adaptive and opportunistic foraging behavior. This flexibility in foraging and increases in population size have led to conflicts with aquaculture and recreational and commercial fishing (Duffy 1995). Although double-crested cormorants roosting in the lower Mississippi Valley appear to have minimal negative impact on sport fisheri...

Double-Crested Cormorant Distribution on Catfish Aquaculture in the Yazoo River Basin of Mississippi

Estimating the catfish aquaculture production losses that can be attributed to double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) has proved problematic because knowledge of the distribution of cormorants on catfish aquaculture is lacking. We evaluated use versus availability of various production pond types and landscape-scale factors affecting the distribution of cormorants on channel catfish ...
